It’s not the features, it’s the benefits stupid
Tuesday, September 19th, 2006Let me explain. I’m finally learning that it’s not features that sell software, it’s the benefits the user gets from using the software. Self-evident, right? You’d think so, but software companies are not getting it.
For example, Gmail doesn’t have many features compared to a desktop email program, but its spam detection is pretty fantastic, making it a worthy email, not just webmail client. Same goes for Microsoft Word. It’s great software, but for someone not needing its power and complexity, there are a few good alternatives which play and convert well with Word, so you’re never out of the loop. On the other hand, the new Adobe Acrobat 8.0 has tons of features (although conferencing is the only real new fetaure of v.8), but for the average user, it often brings frustration and headaches, leaving them better off with free or shareware alternatives like ScanSoft PDF Converter Pro by Nuance, or for solid document PDF creation, pdf Factory Pro, not to mention a host of quality freeware PDF alternatives. The recent release of Paint Shop Pro 11 is another example of feature-marketing. It brings one decent new feature to the table (depth of field), and then promptly asks for upgrade money.

Perhaps there are other ways of looking at this “features vs. benefits” argument, but at this point, I’m asking how your software benefits me, not whether it has a new bell or whistle in version 32.0. If not, then I’ll upgrade when it’s in my best interest, not when the company tells me to. And if you don’t support your previous versions, then I’ll find other software to use.

Friday, September 15th, 2006This just in: I’m not dead but I feel like it
Friday, September 15th, 2006I dream of faster, leaner, more efficient software, but then most of the time, that shit ain’t happening. But after a murderously long day (I’ve been up now for 30 hours), I have some good news that I’m really excited about:
— I haven’t been as excited about a piece of software in a long time as I have for the XYplorer File Manager. This is truly software as art.
— I’m loving Opera 9 with one exception — it still uses serif fonts in some pages despite reconfiguring all the fonts to sans serif;
— SoftMaker Office 2006 looks and feels great — this is Microsoft Excel and Word 2003 the way most people would want it;
— The latest Maxthon 2.0 Preview kicks ass for UI improvements. I mean goddamn, er, woweee! Too bad it sits on top of IE7;
— Hell’s bells, the Microsoft Office 2007 beta 2 Technical Refresh fixes lots of “issues” users had with it, including my own. Most will like the Silver theme and the ribbon that can be hidden all the time. Download it here.
— ACDSee 9 is finally out and for a $29 upgrade ($39 full price), it’s the best image viewer ever. ACDSee is doing a lot of things right over the past two years.
— Screenshot Captor made another leap this past week with even more improvements. This is another very exciting app.
— NetLimiter Pro has been a real boon to me. Jesus fuck, this is fantastic for keeping the ISP storm troopers off your ass.
— Switched to GigaNews this week because of extended downtime at UsenetServer.com. I’m happy, but poorer for it as GigaNews is expensive.
So they’ll be lots to write about in 2007, leaving me less things to write about at Shitware, which is one of the best site ideas ever. Gird your loins and strap on protection. It’s going to be a fun year.
Which word processor is the most powerful?
Friday, September 8th, 2006Been working with TextMaker 2006 more this week and thought I’d find its limits. Here’s proof in the Properties dialog of what this little word processor can do.

I created a 4,090-page document that consisted of almost 4 million words (that’s about 80 average-length novels), and in the end the file in TextMaker’s native format, .tmd, was only 31M in size. Moreover, TextMaker saved this document in just over four seconds on my machine, and opened it fresh instantly. Word 2007 took nine seconds to load it as a Word 2003 .doc file at 47.78M. Saving the file to the new .docx format took 18 seconds, although incredibly, the file was only 2.0M in size. Reopening the file in Word 2007 from scratch took 51 seconds. Saving it in OpenOffice’s .odt format was fine at 2.5M, but OpenOffice would not open a file that length. For the sake of sheer size, Word 2007 allows the biggest documents and most processing power. After creating a 32,767-page document, Word 2007 had reached its upper limit.
So if you’re still undecided on word processors, at least you know what kind of power they have now. For anyone not willing to dive into Microsoft’s Office system 2007, then SoftMaker’s TextMaker is a sensible, powerful, and fast choice. OpenOffice is also a solid, proven alternative if you don’t mind the increasingly fat downloads. SoftMaker Office 2006 represents an improved, more powerful Microsoft Office 2003, but stripped down to its essentials for sheer speed. Most people will want exactly that, especially those not willing to relearn everything with Microsoft Office 2007, assuming they don’t mind its new look.
As for SoftMaker’s spreadsheet, PlanMaker, it’s almost a carbon-copy of Excel 2003, but its charting features are better. Here’s a quick comparison between Excel 2003, PlanMaker, and OpenOffice’s Calc. No, you won’t get PowerPoint or Outlook, but for €$70, SoftMaker Office walks with a light footprint.
